PPAv's POPO Switch and UFS-T Sensor

The PPAv POPO/UFS-T kit uses an infrared (IR) emitter and detector and microprocessor to detect the presence of air in lines containing non-particulate bearing liquids such as fuel, water, hydraulic fluid and so on.  It was designed to allow you to control your fuel transfer pumps and to alert you when the auxiliary tank is empty.  The POPO/UFS-T kit has application for auxiliary fuel transfer in airplanes, boats, recreational vehicles and so on.  It can also be applied to pesticide and aerial spraying applications and others where it is important to transfer the liquid contents of a tank and not run the pump "dry" after transfer, and to know when a line is empty (or nearly empty).  To see how the UFS-T works, click here.

The UFS-T is installed in the transfer line, preferably at, or near, the inlet of the pump.  Both the pump and wires from the UFS-T sensor are wired to the POPO switch.  To start a transfer, the operator presses the POPO switch.  This starts the transfer pumps and powers the UFS-T.  When the UFS-T detects "air", it flashes the LED in the POPO switch, telling the operator to press the POPO again to stop the transfer.

The POPO/UFS-T can be wired to provide a steady light when the pumps are on and a flashing light when "air" is detected.  Alternately, it can be wired so that the LED remains dark during transfer and flashes only when "air" is detected.  The UFS-T also features a built-in test capability.  When the PTT line is activated, a small additional current is sent to the IR emitter, forcing an "air" signal to be detected and indicated on the POPO.  This is a true end-to-end test of the sensing system, not just a test of the light bulb as most press-to-test circuits provide.

All hardware necessary to install the POPO/UFS-T is provided with the kit.  Only wire and a few hand tools are required for installation.  Standard single POPO kit legend reads "AUX PUMP"; 2-POPO kit legend reads "LEFT AUX PUMP" and "RIGHT AUX PUMP".  Other customized legends are available.  Complete instructions are provided with the kit.  The POPO/UFS-T installation and operation manual can be downloaded and viewed by clicking here.

Key Benefits

  • Allows transfer all fuel (or other liquid) from the auxiliary tank--no guessing about whether the tank is empty or not
  • Prevents the transfer pump from being operated "dry", thus extending the operating lifetime of the pump.
  • As simple as a toggle switch, yet it provides a positive indication of transfer operation and the end-of-fuel condition.
  • Low cost and high value-for-cost.
